Sunderland est une ville et un port d'Angleterre situé dans la région administrative Nord-Est et dans le comté du Tyne and Wear, admise au rang de cité en 1992.
Elle était auparavant l'une des plus importantes villes du Royaume-Uni exemptes de ce statut.
La population de la ville intra-muros s'élève à près de 195 000 personnes.
Avec 174 286 habitants , l'agglomération métropolitaine de Sunderland, qui englobe les villes de Washington, Houghton-le-Spring et Hetton-le-Hole, est la deuxième plus vaste ville de la région de l'Angleterre du Nord-Est après Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
