Bien quelle ne compte que 1300 habitants, Portree peut se prévaloir du titre de ville. Son nom est dérivé du gaélique Port-na-Righ, "le port du roi". Ce roi est James V, qui, en 1540, vint demander le soutien des clans. Auparavant, le petit port sappelait Kiltraglen.
Le quai (Bank Street) est bordé de maisons basses aux couleurs vives, de commerces et dhôtels. On y hume encore latmosphère du port. Il y a bien longtemps accostaient ici les bateaux à vapeur chargés de passagers et de marchandises provenant de Stromferry, Glasgow et Oban.
