Le nom repose sur une racine indo-européenne * DRAV-A qu'on retrouve encore aujourd'hui en Hindi Drava signifie « liquide, fluide », terme venant lui-même du sanskrit Dravas: « course, mouvement rapide » . Son nom latin ancien Drăvus désignant en particulier la partie Pannonienne du fleuve, il est probable qu'une langue telle que le celtique ou l'illyrien en soit l'origine. Le nom en grec ancien était Δρίβα "Driva".
