Le duché d'Urbino fut annexé comme province de l'État pontifical après la mort du dernier duc Francesco Maria II della Rovere en 1625. En conséquence, le palais ducal de Pesaro fut la résidence du cardinal légat Luigi Homodei en 1655. Il reçut la reine Christine de Suède lors de son voyage à Rome. Aujourd'hui, le palais est utilisé comme hôtel de ville principal.
