La région de Middag Humsterland était autrefois une mer avec les îles de marais Humsterland et Middag. Les îles étaient entourées de chenaux de prairies qui faisaient pénétrer l'eau de mer à marée haute vers l'intérieur des terres. Ces incursions se produisaient à partir de la mer de Lauwers, située à l'ouest, maintenant le Lauwersmeer, après son assèchement en 1969. La ligne côtière atteignait autrefois la ville de Groningue, mais en raison du comblement de cette zone, le territoire argileux marin est devenu sec. Ce processus a été renforcé après 1100 par l'activité mensuel d'assèchement.
