Le mardi 4 août 1914, de nombreux habitants de Mesch, village du Sud-Limbourg, avaient les yeux rivés sur le Mescherberg. Au loin, des colonnes de militaires allemands avançaient. Le chemin qu'elles empruntaient se trouvait précisément à la frontière entre les Pays-Bas et la Belgique. Les Allemands n'allaient tout de même pas passer par le Limbourg néerlandais ? Le cas échéant, les Pays-Bas entreraient également en guerre.
