À l'âge de 15 ans, le jeune Gérard Mercator, alors encore simplement Gérard de Cremer, a été envoyé aux frais de son grand-oncle Gijsbrecht à l'école Hieronymus des Frères de la Vie Commune à 's-Hertogenbosch. Il y est resté 3 ans et demi et y a appris l'art de raisonner et la grammaire latine.
