Carnunto , centro di origine celtica, fu in seguito un'importante fortezza legionaria dell'Impero romano a partire dal 50 e sede della Flotta Pannonica, diventando anche sede, prima del governatore della Pannonia e poi della Pannonia superior; attualmente si trova in Austria, nel comune di Petronell-Carnuntum.
