Il Ducato di Carinzia era un ducato posto tra la parte meridionale dell'Austria e quella settentrionale della Slovenia. Fece parte del Sacro Romano Impero dal 976 sino alla sua caduta nel 1806 e dell'Impero austro-ungarico sino al 1918. Con i trattati di pace del primo dopoguerra la maggior parte del territorio carinziano fu assegnato alla Prima Repubblica Austriaca, tranne due frange di lingua slovena, che passarono al Regno dei Serbi, Croati e Sloveni, e la Val Canale, che fu annessa all'Italia.
Nel VII secolo era territorio del Principato della Carantania. Successivamente, dal 788 all'843 entrò a far parte dei domini di Carlo Magno per poi passare a regione del regno franco di Ludovico II il Germanico, nipote di Carlo Magno. Dall'889 al 976 fu un distretto di frontiera conosciuto con il nome di Marca di Carinzia.
