La chiesa di Santa Barbara è un esempio di catedral mineraria. Tutte le cattedrali minerarie, ce ne sono anche a Winterslag, Waterschei, Zwartberg e Beringen, risalgono al periodo tra le due guerre. Sono costruite in mattone, appaiono impressionanti e in qualche modo sproporzionate. Santa Barbara a Eisden è stata progettata nel 1934 da Auguste vanden Nieuwenborg in uno stile espressionista con elementi neo-gotici.
Lo sfruttamento del carbone ha dato luogo in Limburgo, più che nella Borinage, a questa splendida architettura. Ovunque nella regione mineraria di Kempen ci sono sicuramente innanzitutto installazioni industriali uniche, ma anche quartieri residenziali ben conservati e imponenti case per ingegneri e dirigenti. Dalla torre quadrata senza punta, alta 53 metri, con 300 gradini, si ha inoltre una vista panoramica sulla bella urbanizzazione della zona e sul quartiere giardino o cité.
