Il Kraenepoel, uno stagno di 22 ettari circondato da boschi, è l'ultimo dei numerosi stagni del campo che nel Medioevo disseminavano il Bulskampveld, l'estesa brughiera da Aalter a Brugge. Si formò a partire dal XIII secolo quando gli abitanti scavavano pietre di campo o estraevano torba. I bacini rimasti servivano per l'allevamento di pesci. Il nome 'Kraenepoel' si riferisce ancora al vecchio termine olandese per torba: kraene o krane. È protetto come area naturale nell'ambito di Natura 2000. Durante periodi di intenso freddo, il Kraenepoel a volte si ghiaccia parzialmente o completamente e, a causa della sua scarsa profondità, è spesso il primo stagno su cui si pattina.
