Gli abitanti di Knokke hanno lottato per secoli per riconquistare terra dal mare. Grazie a vari piccoli lavori di drenaggio, sono riusciti a prosciugare pezzi di terra fino all'inizio del XV secolo. Fino a quando il duca borgognone Giovanni senza Paura fece costruire una diga che unisse tutti i piccoli tratti di diga, prosciugando così la zona retrostante. Di questa diga medievale è rimasta solo la parte classificata in stato originale.
La Diga del Conte Jan è un pezzo della diga costruita da Giovanni senza Paura. Risale al Medioevo ed è il pezzo di diga più antico della Costa.
