La Banda Nera era un temuto gruppo criminale della regione di Galmaarden durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale. Fu chiamata così perché i membri si dipingevano il viso di nero prima di uscire per commettere crimini. Spesso si travestivano anche da tedeschi. La banda si rese colpevole di omicidio, estorsione, furto con scasso, furto e sembrava godere della protezione di alti poteri. La maggior parte dei loro crimini finì nel dimenticatoio e non fu mai chiarita. La popolazione taceva per paura di ritorsioni. L'autore Karl Delauw ne scrisse un libro: 'I Crimini della Banda Nera di Galmaarden'. Sperava che le storie non venissero dimenticate.
