Il creatore di Jommeke, Jef Nys (1927-2009), aveva parecchia famiglia a Koksijde e trascorreva anche regolarmente del tempo sulla costa a Koksijde. Nel 1992, Jef Nys utilizza la località costiera per alcune delle ambientazioni nella storia La mandolina di Caroline. Nello stesso anno, il Festival dei Fumetti di Koksijde ha presentato una bella mostra e pubblicato un'edizione speciale del fumetto con pagine extra. Più di 30 anni dopo, i successori di Nys onorano nuovamente il legame con Koksijde nella serie di fumetti. Lo scheletro dello spermaceti Valentijn ha ricevuto nel 2024 non solo un luogo di riposo definitivo nel NAVIGO Museo della Pesca, ma l'animale è anche stato immortalato nell'album di Jommeke Potvis Valentijn pubblicato da Standaard Uitgeverij.
