Etterbeek è un comune belga di 47 786 abitanti, uno dei 19 comuni della Regione di Bruxelles-Capitale, confinante con i comuni di Bruxelles-ville, Ixelles, Auderghem, Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, Woluwe-Saint-Lambert e Schaerbeek.Secondo la leggenda, Santa Gertrude, figlia di Pipino di Landen, vi fondò una cappella nell'VIII secolo. Il nome deriva forse dalla radice celtica ett che significa "movimento rapido" e la parola olandese beek che significa "flusso" - si trova per la prima volta in un documento datato 1127. L'ortografia attuale compare undici anni dopo, nel 1138, periodo in cui fu costruita una chiesa più nuova e più grande.
