Il nome Waterland è facile da spiegare, ma quello di Oudeman è meno ovvio. Il termine non ha niente a che fare con un uomo di età avanzata, ma rappresenta 'area abbandonata'. Il nome originale di questo villaggio è almeno altrettanto bello quanto l'attuale e si riferisce al suo santo patrono: Sint-Niclaes-ter-Varent.
