Niel è un comune sulla riva destra settentrionale del Rupel. Una volta qui c'erano molte fornaci di mattoni. Ora che quella industria è scomparsa, la natura sta gradualmente riprendendo il sopravvento in molti luoghi abbandonati e nelle cave di argilla. Così è nato l'area naturale di Walenhoek. Nei pressi di Niel puoi prendere il traghetto per Wintam, famosa per le aree naturali e il grande slu di mare che collega il fiume Schelda con il Canale di Bruxelles-Schelda.
