Dopo l'accordo migratorio belgo-italiano del 1946, nel quale l'Italia ricevette carbone belga in cambio della possibilità di inviare lavoratori in Belgio, arrivarono solo nella regione di Charleroi al culmine di quella migrazione circa trentamilia italiani. Dopo la chiusura delle miniere di carbone vallone, si stima che solo il 20% di loro sia tornato nel proprio paese d'origine.
