Prima che fosse possibile abbeverare bovini e cavalli nella stalla o al pascolo , la mandria doveva essere portata più volte al giorno all'abbeveratoio. Era un lavoro duro e che richiedeva tempo.
Nei villaggi troppo lontani da un fiume o da uno stagno, gli animali dovevano dissetarsi agli abbeveratoi (alimentati dalla fonte più vicina).
Ci sono 2 tipi di trogoli rettangolari. Uno ha un doppio lavabo ; lo straripamento del primo serbatoio alimenta il secondo. Questi contenitori probabilmente fungevano anche da servizi igienici. Gli altri bidoni più vecchi hanno un solo lavandino.
