Nel 1640 si parlava della 'Nuova Riviere', ora il canale è comunemente chiamato 'la via' dai residenti di Middelkerke. Ufficialmente: il canale Plassendale-Nieuwpoort.
Il tracciato del canale segue per gran parte il letto del vecchio Ieperleed. Durante la costruzione nel XVII secolo c'erano circa 800 operai al lavoro. I lavori erano eseguiti con pale, carri e tavole che, dopo essere state infisse nel terreno, venivano tirate per rompere la terra. Gli operai utilizzavano poi la terra scavata per erigere argini su entrambi i lati del canale.
