Sotto l'argilla fertile si trova uno strato calcareo permeabile all'acqua. I Romani utilizzavano questo calcare (chiamato in volgare mergel) nelle loro costruzioni. Anche nella costruzione di molte chiese di Haspengouw, tra cui la basilica di Tongeren, le pietre calcaree di Heerse si sono rivelate molto utili. Tra il 1930 e il 1960, si coltivavano in queste ex cave di mergel milioni di funghi champignon. Ora queste grotte (chiamate anche pozzi di mergel) costituiscono uno dei principali luoghi di svernamento per i pipistrelli in Europa occidentale.
