La città si trova all'estremità nord-ovest del lago di Lucerna, dove l'acqua del lago scorre di nuovo nel fiume Reuss. La città è il centro economico e culturale della Svizzera interna (o Svizzera centrale). Il Reuss divide la città nella città vecchia e nella parte nuova. Il ponte di legno coperto più antico del mondo (Kapellbrücke) con la torre dell'acqua e il Spreuerbrücke collegano la città vecchia e nuova. La posizione tra il lago e le montagne (Pilatus e Rigi) è pittoresca e ha creato un forte sviluppo del turismo, sin dal 1840.
