È una storica città della Vestfalia, posta in un avvallamento fra la Foresta di Teutoburgo e l'Eggegebirge sulle sorgenti del fiume Pader. Fu scelta da Carlo Magno per le due prime Diete nel 777, e nel 799 s'incontrò col papa Leone III col quale siglò l'alleanza fra la Chiesa e l'Impero. Nell'805 la rese sede vescovile, com'è tuttora.
