La città di Velen si trova nella parte occidentale del Münsterland, nel nord-ovest dello stato della Renania Settentrionale-Vestfalia, nel distretto di Borken, nella regione di Münster. Nel 2003, Velen ha ricevuto il titolo di località di villeggiatura di stato riconosciuta conferito dal presidente del governo di Münster.
