Groß-Gerau è il capoluogo del distretto di Groß-Gerau, situato nel sud dell'Assia. La città media si trova nella regione sud di Rhein-Main e svolge la funzione di centro intermedio rispetto al suo hinterland.
Groß-Gerau si trova a nord del Ried dell'Assia, nella pianura alluvionale del Reno. A pochi chilometri a sud-ovest si trova la più grande area naturale protetta dell'Assia, il Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue, con la colonna svedese.
