Il comune è stato formato il 1° dicembre 1970 attraverso la fusione dei precedenti comuni autonomi di Eiterhagen, Wattenbach e Wellerode nell'ambito della riforma territoriale. Il suo nome è stato scelto per la posizione nella media montagna Söhre. Söhrewald fa parte dei comuni residenziali dell'Assia settentrionale e praticamente non ha industria. In passato, i villaggi di Söhrewald erano caratterizzati dall'agricoltura.
