Kues è conosciuta come il luogo di nascita del dotto del XV secolo Nicolaus Cusanus. Nicolaus Cusanus era un teologo, filosofo, matematico, astronomo, umanista e giurista tedesco. Viene spesso considerato il genio del XV secolo. Descrisse per la prima volta l'uso di lenti concave per correggere la miopia. E nel campo della politica sviluppò un proprio sistema di elezioni ponderate. In un dipinto nell'ospedale di Kues si può ancora vedere la sua immagine. Fu dipinto dal Meister des Marienlebens.
