C'è una leggenda secondo cui Brema resterà libera e indipendente finché il Gard Roland veglierà sulla città. Per questo motivo si sostiene che una seconda statua di Roland sia nascosta nelle cantine sotterranee del municipio, pronta per essere installata rapidamente come sostituto nel caso in cui l'originale dovesse cadere.
La statua è stata inserita nella lista dei patrimoni dell'umanità dell'UNESCO.
Ci sono diverse statue di Roland a Brema. La più famosa si trova davanti al municipio, con vista sulla cattedrale.
