Il Hornisgrinde è una catena montuosa situata nella parte nord della Foresta Nera. Il punto più alto di questa cresta si trova a pochi chilometri a sud (1164 metri di altitudine), la parte nord di questa cresta montuosa ha il picco a 1130 metri di altitudine. La parte nord di questa cresta è facilmente riconoscibile per l'imponente torre di televisione SWR. L'accesso alla sommità può talvolta essere chiuso da una barriera. In caso di gelo, è necessario tenere conto del ghiaccio che cade dalla torre di televisione!
Il Hornisgrinde-Nord è spesso scalato in combinazione con l'Unterstmatt o da Sasbachwalden. In entrambi i casi, passerai poi un ponte di quasi 960 metri di dislivello dalla valle del Reno.
