Quattro Ursuline - tra cui due figlie del conte von Nesselrode-Reichenstein di Herten - arrivano il 21 gennaio dal monastero madre di Colonia a Dorsten. Per educare giovani donne nella fede cristiana, aprono nella "Casa Alta" in via Blindestraße (oggi: via Ursulastraße) una scuola elementare gratuita e una scuola femminile con collegio. Dopo l'acquisizione di ulteriori case, la "Casa Alta" viene trasformata in chiesa del monastero. Oggi le Ursuline gestiscono un importante liceo e una scuola secondaria.
