Gli abitanti dell'Eifel e delle Ardenne hanno a lungo affrontato confini arbitrarî, ma sono sempre riusciti a ritrovarsi. Nel 1958 è nato il Naturpark Südeifel. Poiché l'area naturale su entrambi i lati del confine presenta molte caratteristiche comuni, si è deciso di preservare e mantenere questo paesaggio con la sua bellezza unica. In quel momento nacque il parco naturale tedesco-lussemburghese. Fu inaugurato a Vianden il 4 maggio 1963.
Il legame tra i paesi è visibile attraverso i sette ponti pedonali transfrontalieri sui fiumi Sauer e Our. Il ponte Alfred-Toepfer è uno di questi ponti pedonali. Il suo nome è dedicato all'imprenditore di Amburgo Alfred Toepfer (†1993). Nel 1954 fu considerato il fondatore dei parchi naturali in Germania. Per proteggere i meravigliosi paesaggi, oggi la Germania conta oltre 100 parchi naturali.
