Gravelines è un comune francese situato nel dipartimento del Nord nella regione dell'Alta Francia.Gravelines sorse nel XII secolo attorno alla foce di un canale che univa l'importante città di Saint-Omer alla Manica. In seguito al trattato di Brétigny che mise fine alla prima fase della guerra dei cent'anni, la cittadina si ritrovò ad essere l'ultimo avamposto fiammingo prima dei domini inglesi d'oltremanica. Nel 1383 Gravelines fu conquistata e distrutta dalle truppe inglesi di Enrico Despenser durante la crociata contro Luigi II delle Fiandre. Nel XVI secolo, vista la sua posizione strategica di piazzaforte asburgica al confine con la Francia, fu pesantemente fortificata.
