Il luogo dove è stata costruita l'Opera Garnier era estremamente umido. Nonostante otto pompe, non si riusciva a rendere il terreno asciutto. L'architetto Garnier costruì quindi una cisterna di cemento dove veniva raccolta l'acqua. Così nacque la leggenda che l'opera fosse stata costruita su un lago sotterraneo. Questa storia è stata utilizzata anche ne Il Fantasma dell'Opera, la storia di Gaston Leroux. Esiste anche una leggenda che qui sarebbero state allevate trote in quel lago.
