Il Principato d'Orange venne costituito nel 1163 dall'Imperatore Federico I quando diede la propria garanzia d'indipendenza alla Contea d'Orange dal Sacro Romano Impero. Il Principato divenne parte del patrimonio della Casa d'Orange-Nassau quando Guglielmo I "il Taciturno" ereditò il titolo di Principe d'Orange nel 1544, sin quando non venne ceduto alla Francia nel 1713 con il Trattato di Utrecht.
