L'area turistica di Donegal prende il nome dalla città di Donegal nel sud della contea. È stata anche conosciuta come Contea di Tyrconnell o Tirconaill (Tír Chonaill), dal territorio storico. La Contea di Donegal era la casa del potente Clann Dálaigh, il cui ramo più noto era il Clann Ó Domhnaill, meglio conosciuto in inglese come la dinastia O'Donnell. La Contea di Donegal è stata una delle zone più colpite dell'Ulster durante la Grande Carestia della fine degli anni 1840 in Irlanda. Vastissimi tratti della contea furono devastati, con molte aree che divennero permanentemente spopolate. Un numero enorme di persone della Contea di Donegal emigrò in questo periodo, principalmente attraverso il porto di Foyle.
