Si divide in due parti: il centro storico, che sorge su un colle a circa 474 m s.l.m., e l'area moderna, nell'alta valle del Crati, che ospita la sede comunale, posta a 184 metri s.l.m., e che è conurbata con Cosenza.
È uno dei centri più vivaci dal punto di vista economico, industriale e culturale della regione. Ciò è favorito sia dall'influenza della vicina Cosenza sia dalla presenza di collegamenti infrastrutturali vari , ma soprattutto dal fatto che nel territorio di Rende insiste il campus di Arcavacata, sede dell'Università della Calabria.
