In virtù della sua posizione geografica di rilevante interesse Lucera fu storicamente contesa tra le varie popolazioni dominanti, a partire dall'epoca romana e per tutto il medioevo.
Nota per la sua fortezza svevo-angioina e il suo anfiteatro augusteo , sede vescovile almeno dal V secolo, fu capoluogo della provincia di Capitanata e del contado di Molise dal 1584 al 1806.
