San Candido è un comune italiano di 3 365 abitanti della provincia autonoma di Bolzano, in Trentino-Alto Adige, situato nell'Alta Pusteria: comune-mercato dal 1303, è una nota località turistica invernale ed estiva delle Dolomiti, inclusa nel parco naturale Tre Cime.
Il toponimo è attestato come India nel 769, Intihha nell'822 e Intichingen nel 1070 e deriva forse dal nome di persona latino Indius attraverso una forma *Intica. Il nome italiano San Candido è attestato dal 1870 in area ladina fodom.
Peraltro nel ladino della val Badia è attestato nel 1915 nella forma San Ciana, tuttora usato anche dalla Provincia di Bolzano per i suoi testi in ladino. Ettore Tolomei aveva proposto San Candido alla Drava ma è stato accolto solo in parte e corrisponde a quello del compatrono della collegiata.
