Il paese il cui nome deriva probabilmente da "Attiat" e da "Attius", è stato per molti secoli di proprietà dei Bossi, una potente famiglia da cui prese anche il nome nel 1717 la Val Bodia, che diventò Val Bossa.
Questa famiglia, sostenitrice dei Visconti, venne inserita nella "Matricula Nobilium" di Ottone Visconti nel 1277 con il nome di Bossis de Acciate, ed è con questo atto che il paese ottiene un riconoscimento nobiliare da parte dell'Arcivescovo di Milano.
