Situata al centro di un ideale triangolo che ha per vertici le città di Bari, Brindisi e Taranto, distanti da Fasano circa 50 km, la città segna il confine fra il Salento e la Terra di Bari. Il suo territorio comprende varie frazioni, estendendosi per 15 km sulla costa del Mare Adriatico e inoltrandosi in Valle d'Itria. Il comune, insieme con la vicina Cisternino, fu aggregato alla nuova provincia nel 1927; nel 1955 fu presentata alla Camera da parte della deputata Maria Chieco Bianchi una proposta di legge per riportare la città nel territorio barese.
