Reggio Emilia è un comune italiano di 168 874 abitanti, capoluogo dell'omonima provincia in Emilia-Romagna.
Sorta per volere del console Marco Emilio Lepido lungo la via Emilia, l'antica strada romana che collegava Piacenza a Rimini, Reggio Emilia può fregiarsi dell'appellativo di Città del Tricolore, in quanto la bandiera d'Italia, su ispirazione dei vessilli della Repubblica Cispadana, nacque e fu mostrata per la prima volta in questa città il 7 gennaio 1797. Il vessillo fu esposto nella settecentesca Sala del Tricolore del municipio, che ospita le sedute del consiglio comunale.
