Il colatore Lambro Meridionale, che si forma a Milano e raccoglie anche parte delle acque dell'Olona, è il suo maggiore affluente.
Il nome italiano del fiume deriva dal latino Lambrus, che deriva a sua volta da un antico lemma gallico, costruito da "lam", "palude" . A suffragio della teoria è agevole constatare come nell'antica Gallia Transalpina sussistano vari nominativi di fiumi similari a Lambro, ovverosia Le Lambres, affluente del fiume Drome; Le Ruisseau de Lambre, affluente del Reno; Le Lambre, affluente del Dolon, e altri ancora. Tuttavia un fiume Lambro scorre anche in Campania.
