L'Amiata è un antico vulcano inattivo, caratterizzato da rocce vulcaniche e piccoli laghi. Il suo picco è a 1.738 metri (5.702 piedi) sul livello del mare.
Le acque della montagna alimentano l'acquedotto del Fiora, che serve gran parte della Toscana meridionale e parte del Lazio settentrionale; nell'Amiata si trovano anche le sorgenti dei fiumi Fiora e Albegna, quest'ultimo sul Monte Buceto, che costituisce lo sperone più sud-occidentale del massiccio.
