La campagna che circonda Volterra è formata da dolci colline, punteggiate a ovest dallo spettacolo selvaggio e incredibile delle gole scoscese conosciute come Le Balze, 'le Rocce'. Queste profonde trincee, create dalla continua erosione di strati di sabbia e argilla, hanno inghiottito nei secoli fortificazioni, chiese e insediamenti. Le mura etrusche che qui sorgevano caddero preda di una frana, così come le tombe paleocristiane. Oggi la Badia, abbazia dell'XI secolo, sorge accanto a un baratro in attesa del suo inevitabile destino. Per una vista perfetta di questo paesaggio drammatico, dirigetevi a ovest attraverso la Porta San Francesco e oltrepassate il Borgo San Giusto fino a raggiungere Le Balze (a 20 minuti a piedi).
