Possiede una delle collezioni archeologiche più ricche d'Italia e testimonianze della storia siciliana in tutte le sue fasi, dalla preistoria al Medioevo
Tra i numerosi oggetti esposti sono particolarmente interessanti : la preziosa 'Pietra di Palermo', un testo geroglifico del 2900 aC. Le 'Metopi' dei templi di Selinunte; grondaie con teste di leone; reperti della civiltà etrusca provenienti da Chiusi; l'Ariete , statua in bronzo del III secolo aC; il gruppo bronzeo di 'Ercole che uccide un cervo', opera romana proveniente da Pompei, ecc.
