La chiesa, insieme al monastero , fu costruita nel 1344 da Matteo Sclafani sul sito del precedente palazzo di Matteo Termini, vendicatore della Sicilia e zio di Sclafani.
La chiesa, completamente rinnovata nel 1678 , ha pianta rettangolare con altari laterali, presbiterio quadrangolare, su cui si eleva una breve cupola, e abside semicircolare.
L' elegante interno è decorato con rivestimenti marmorei, misti a stucchi, interessanti affreschi e l'altare maggiore è decorato con marmi e pietre dure.
Di notevole interesse è la tela che Olivio Sozzi dipinse nel 1735 con l'immagine “S. Chiara porta in mano il sacramento" e il sacramento che Gaspare Serenario creò con la "Crocifissione" . L'arco trionfale conserva gli affreschi di Antonio Grano con l'"Apoteosi della Trinità". Appesi nel presbiterio, tra la festosa ed estesa sequenza di marmi. e figure, due grandi tele, eseguite da Guglielmo Borremans con storie di San Francesco e Santa Chiara.
Nel complesso è presente un centro sociale per l'accoglienza di lavoratori extracomunitari .
