È stato qui, in questo orto botanico di Leida, che il medico e botanico tedesco Philipp Franz von Siebold piantò il knotweed giapponese. Nel 1822 si trasferì a Batavia come chirurgo maggiore del legionario olandese e portò con sé la Fallopia japonica. È la pianta infestante più aggressiva che dobbiamo combattere ora nella nostra regione. Intorno al 1841, il talea iniziò la sua inarrestabile corsa invasiva attraverso tutto il continente europeo.
