Dove provenga esattamente il nome Kronenberg non è noto in modo univoco. C'è una teoria che suppone che questo nome derivi da una famiglia con quel nome, che si stabilì qui. Si tratterebbe del Kronenbergerhof, dove nel 1466 abitava un certo Jan van Croonenborgh.
Un'altra teoria è che la spiegazione debba essere cercata nel paesaggio. Nei pressi di Sevenum si trovano le Schatberg, l'Heesberg, lo Steegberg e il Bergerhoek. Queste "montagne" sono in realtà dune di sabbia mobile. L'origine dell'aggiunta Kronen non è nota in questo contesto.
