La 'Battaglia dell'ombra', descritta da A. Korthals Altes nel libro omonimo, si svolse sul territorio dei comuni di Asten, Deurne, Nederweert e (allora) Meijel. Dopo che la 7ª Divisione Corazzata statunitense aveva resistito a una superiorità tedesca, toccò alla 15ª Divisione Scozzese, insieme agli americani, purificare la zona circostante dai militari tedeschi. In quei combattimenti molti centinaia di militari persero la vita. Inoltre, i villaggi ecclesiastici di Deurne, Liessel e Neerkant lamentarono decine di vittime civili. Nel 1992 è stato eretto a Liessel questo monumento dignitoso per tutte le vittime di guerra.
