Zaamslag è uno dei più antichi insediamenti del comune di Terneuzen. Già attorno all'anno 1000, i primi abitanti si stabilirono su un rialzo nel paesaggio, un promontorio. Questo divenne poi il Plein. Proprio a sud-est del villaggio si trovava il castello. La piazza del villaggio e il reticolo stradale risalgono al periodo della guerra degli ottant'anni. Molte delle case al Plein sono originariamente risalenti anche al XVII secolo.
